The Ship to Ship Operations course is specifically designed for Captains and Officers of oil tankers, chemical carriers, and gas carriers who are involved in complex and critical ship-to-ship cargo transfer operations (STS operations). AVANT Seafarers Training Centre, operating since 2003 with a license from the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, offers this course in accordance with the highest international STCW standards and American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) requirements. Ship to Ship Operations are a critically important element of international maritime transportation of oil, petroleum products, chemicals, liquefied gases, and other cargoes. These operations enable maritime companies to optimize logistics chains, significantly reduce transportation costs, ensure route flexibility, and overcome port infrastructure limitations. However, STS operations involve heightened risks: potential emergency oil spills in open seas, hull damage during mooring, accidents during cargo transfer, and crew safety hazards. This is why international maritime regulations and conventions establish extremely strict requirements for planning, preparation, and execution of STS operations. The course is based on the authoritative international Ship to Ship Transfer Guide for Petroleum, Chemicals and Liquefied Gases and consists of 3 comprehensive training modules. Professional video lessons from experienced instructors with extensive sea-going experience, supplementary training materials, international guidelines, and practical documents will help you thoroughly master all course topics. Modules can be studied at your convenience on a computer, smartphone, or tablet, ensuring maximum learning flexibility.
You will master key international STS operations terminology and understand the complete sequence of all transfer stages from planning to completion, which forms the foundation of safe operations. You will learn to professionally assess vessel compatibility for operations, considering their dimensions, cargo type, equipment, and weather conditions, as well as develop detailed STS operation plans in accordance with international standards. The course will teach you to organize safe vessel maneuvering during approach, mooring, and unmooring both at anchor and underway, accounting for wind, waves, currents, and other factors. You will be able to confidently apply international OCIMF standards, IMO recommendations, and industry guidelines in practice under real-world conditions. Special attention is given to emergency and critical situation response: you will learn to react quickly to spills, fires, equipment failures, and other critical incidents during STS operations. The course also covers proper preparation and use of specialized equipment - fenders, hoses, mooring lines - and ensuring safety of all operations in diverse maritime conditions, including challenging weather situations.
Course graduates must demonstrate acquired competence by successfully passing a final test covering all key aspects of STS operations. Upon successful course completion and test passage, you will receive an internationally recognized certificate in "Ship to Ship Operations" confirming your qualification to participate in ship-to-ship transfer operations. This certificate meets the requirements of maritime administrations of Ukraine, Panama, Dominican Republic, Republic of the Marshall Islands, and other flag states.
