The course “Basic Training for Oil and Chemical Tanker Cargo Operations” is designed for crews of oil and chemical tankers
(masters, officers and ratings) involved in cargo operations, as well as cadets of maritime educational institutions.
The programme has been developed in accordance with the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification
and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW Convention) – Regulation V/1‑1, paragraphs 1 and 2, Section A‑V/1‑1, paragraph 1,
Sections B‑V/1 and B‑V/1‑1, and Table A‑V/1‑1‑1 of the STCW Code, the International Convention for the Safety of Life
at Sea 1974 (SOLAS 74) as amended, the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships 1973/78
(MARPOL 73/78), and the recommendations of IMO Model Course 1.01 “Basic Training for Oil and Chemical Tanker Cargo Operations”.
The course consists of 12 modules and provides basic training in working with cargoes and cargo equipment on oil and
chemical tankers, including safety, fire safety measures, pollution prevention, operating practices and compliance
with international conventions and national requirements of Ukraine.
Training is delivered fully online via video lessons, additional study materials and documents accessible from a
computer, smartphone or tablet.
After completing all modules, participants must pass a final test and, if successful, receive a certificate of completion.
Upon successful completion of the course, participants will be able to:
- understand the principles of safe operation of oil and chemical tankers during cargo handling
- be familiar with the design, equipment, instruments and controls used for cargo operations on tankers
- plan cargo operations using appropriate checklists and time schedules for different stages of work
- apply safe procedures when loading, discharging, tank cleaning, gas‑freeing and ballasting on board
- identify operational problems during cargo operations and assist in resolving them in a timely manner
- take measures to prevent pollution of the marine environment when handling oil and chemical cargoes
- assist in implementing emergency plans and co‑ordinate actions during emergency situations on board
- understand crew responsibilities under international conventions and Ukrainian national requirements
for the carriage and handling of oil and chemical cargoes
To obtain the certificate, participants must complete all 12 course modules and successfully pass the final test,
confirming compliance with the requirements of Regulation V/1‑1 of the STCW Convention, as amended, and Section A‑V/1‑1
and Table A‑V/1‑1‑1 of the STCW Code.
Upon successful completion of the training, participants are awarded the certificate
“Basic Training for Oil and Chemical Tanker Cargo Operations”, confirming their readiness to take direct responsibility
for loading, unloading and the safe operation of oil and chemical tankers when transporting and handling cargo.
