The course ‘Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) tanker cargo and ballast handling operations’ is intended for captains, chief engineers, chief mates, second engineers and any persons who are directly responsible for loading, unloading, caring for cargo in transit or handling cargo on board a liquefied petroleum gas tanker.
The course has been developed in accordance with the requirements of the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers – Section A-V/1; B-V/1 of the Code on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers, the International Convention on Safety of Life at Sea, 1974 (SOLAS 74), as amended, the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships, 1973/78, as amended (MARPOL 73/78), and in accordance with the recommendations of IMO Model Course 1.35 ‘Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) tanker cargo and ballast handling simulator’.
The course consists of a series of exercises structured around the operation of a liquefied gas tanker's cargo and ballast systems and performed in conjunction with a simulator. This allows students to familiarise themselves with the location of the cargo tanks, holds and ballast tanks that make up the system, as well as the instruments and controls used.
Graduates must demonstrate their competence by successfully demonstrating their knowledge on the simulator. Students who successfully complete the course will make a safer and more effective contribution to the operation and management of the cargo and ballast systems of a liquefied gas tanker, thereby improving the safety of the vessel and ensuring greater protection of the environment.
