Proficiency in Survival Crafts and Rescue Boats Other Than Fast Rescue Boats is a specialised course for crew members responsible for commanding and managing survival craft during emergencies at sea.
The programme is designed in accordance with the requirements of the STCW Convention (Regulations VI/2, Sections A-VI/2 and B-VI/2 of the STCW Code), SOLAS-74 as amended, the International Life-Saving Appliance Code (LSA Code) and the recommendations of IMO Model Course 1.23.
The course provides comprehensive training in evacuation organisation, collective life-saving appliances management, life support for casualties and coordination of crew actions in extreme conditions. This is a mandatory qualification for officers and crew members responsible for the safety of human life at sea.
- • To command the preparation, embarkation and lowering of lifeboats and rafts in various sea conditions;
- • To safely start and operate lifeboat engines and associated equipment;
- • Manage lifesaving appliances in stormy weather and organise abandonment of the ship;
- • Use radio equipment, pyrotechnic distress signals and communication devices to determine location;
- • Organise life support for victims: distribution of food, water, protection from hypothermia;
- • Apply rescue techniques using helicopters and towing rafts;
- • Carry out water rescues using duty boats and lifeboats;
- • Provide first aid to survivors, stop bleeding and treat shock;
- • Perform maintenance procedures on rescue equipment and descent devices.
The course consists of 20 training modules with video lessons, practical tasks and methodological materials. Access to training is available from a computer, tablet or smartphone.
Upon completion of the programme, participants take a final test to confirm their acquired skills in the management of rescue equipment.
Successful completion of the course entitles participants to receive an international certificate of ‘Proficiency in Survival Crafts and Rescue Boats Other Than Fast Rescue Boats’, which is mandatory for officers and ratings responsible for rescue equipment. The certificate is valid for 5 years.
